Volvo CE Delivers Largest Excavator for Major Renewable Energy Project in Fukushima, Japan
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) achieved a significant milestone in Japan by delivering the largest excavator ever sold in the country. This momentous occasion took place as Volvo CE handed over the EC750EL excavator to support the construction of a major renewable energy project in Fukushima, Japan. Accompanying the EC750EL is an A45G articulated hauler, working together to shape the groundwork for the ambitious project.

The recipient of these impressive machines is the rental company EPR, which has a long-standing history of using Volvo articulated haulers in their fleet. In addition to their renowned articulated haulers, EPR is now exploring the benefits of combining them with Volvo excavators. The machines have proven to be highly productive, and Volvo CE believes that other companies in Japan will take note of their exceptional performance.

At the vast job site, which spans 345 hectares with nearly 60 hectares requiring earthworks, there are approximately 60 machines in operation, including 10 from Volvo CE. The terrain is challenging, with steep and slippery mountainous areas, but Volvo’s articulated haulers are up to the task with their industry-leading mobility.

The project’s ultimate goal is to develop a mega-solar power site capable of generating around 40 MW of energy, with the installation of over 130,000 solar panels of 450 W capacity. The project commenced in 2022 and is expected to continue for nearly five years.

Volvo CE’s involvement in this significant endeavor aligns with its Science-Based-Targets (SBT) initiative, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and supporting Japan’s growing focus on renewable energy. The country has witnessed a surge in solar power investments since 2013, with approximately 572 companies participating in the SBTi program.

With its advanced machinery, Volvo Construction Equipment is at the forefront of bringing ambitious projects like this renewable energy endeavor to life. The success of this collaboration with EPR in Japan opens up opportunities for Volvo CE to participate in similar initiatives in the future.
