PPG (NYSE: PPG) announced its collaboration with RightShip, a digital maritime sustainability platform, through the Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. This initiative focuses on developing and adopting innovative solutions for a more sustainable maritime industry.
PPG’s biocide-free silicone fouling release coating, PPG SIGMAGLIDE® 2390, is the only hull coating approved by RightShip’s rigorous product review process for the program. This approval highlights its contribution to a zero-harm maritime industry and its positive sustainability impact.
Christopher Saunders, Chief Maritime Officer at RightShip, stated, “The RightShip Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program connects manufacturers with shipowners and educates charterers about new technologies, fostering a system that supports safety and sustainability on board vessels.”
Ariana Psomas, PPG’s global segment director, new build and dry dock, Protective and Marine Coatings, said, “We are proud to be part of this program. Our biocide-free PPG Sigmaglide 2390 coating offers significant sustainability benefits, with instant power savings of up to 20% and greenhouse gas emissions reduction of up to 35% compared to traditional antifoulings.”
The performance benefits of PPG Sigmaglide 2390 come from PPG HYDRORESET™ technology, which creates an almost friction-free, nonstick surface in water, preventing marine organisms from adhering. This results in low-friction properties and excellent fouling control, with up to 150 days of idle performance.
Psomas added, “Significant power and emission savings require radical improvements in design and efficiency, making the right hull coating crucial. That’s why more shipping companies are adopting low-friction silicone coatings.”
