Volvo is leading the charge towards electrifying the transport, mobility, and equipment sectors, significantly assisting customers in reducing their carbon emissions. Its goal is to address sustainability challenges from both a customer and societal perspective.
Similarly, the Singapore Green Plan 2030 is a nationwide effort to advance the country’s sustainable development objectives. The presence of two key sustainability stakeholders in Singapore holds great potential for a sustainable future in the near term
Gino Marzola, Managing Director of DSV Air & Sea Singapore & Malaysia, commented: “The launch of our new electric fleet represents a pivotal milestone for DSV in Singapore. This isn’t merely about adopting new technology; it’s about leading the way towards a greener, more sustainable future. We’re delighted with the positive feedback from clients and are confident that this initiative will bring us closer to our long-term sustainability goals.”
Volvo Trucks is among the world’s largest manufacturers and a market leader in electromobility, with 4,200 electric trucks operating across 46 countries. DSV, the world’s largest transport and logistics company, is one of the biggest purchasers of electric models from Volvo Trucks and earlier this year secured a substantial order for 300 new trucks for its European operations.
The models introduced in Singapore are Volvo FL Electric and Volvo FM Electric. These trucks represent the latest in cutting-edge technology, delivering efficient, zero-emission transport solutions. The Volvo FL Electric is designed for urban distribution, featuring a compact design and a nimble turning radius, making it ideal for navigating Singapore’s densely populated urban centre and handling last-mile deliveries.
The larger Volvo FM Electric offers greater payload capacity and advanced technology suited for long-haul operations, ensuring high performance with zero emissions.
Both models are equipped with an all-electric drivetrain, enabling quieter operations and reducing noise pollution. They also deliver more cost-effective operations and lower maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel vehicles.
The Volvo FL and FM Electric trucks have been customised to meet DSV’s specific operational needs in Singapore, including modifications to optimise cargo capacity. The FL is equipped with three batteries, while the FM is fitted with five, enabling longer-range performance and greater versatility.
Volvo Trucks is preparing to further electrify its heavy truck range globally, with the forthcoming launch of a long-range version of the FH Electric truck in 2025. This model will be capable of travelling up to 600 km on a single charge, allowing customers to use electric trucks on longer routes without frequent recharging.
This extended range is made possible by Volvo’s innovative e-axle technology, which increases battery capacity and enhances battery efficiency, management systems, and powertrain performance.
Anna Engblom, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks, Southeast Asia & Japan, stated: “Long-term partnerships and a determined effort to make a real impact are essential for achieving substantial CO2 reductions in practice. Over the past few years, we’ve witnessed a shift towards a sustainable future in many of our markets. As a manufacturer, we must be ready to adapt to changes that can happen unexpectedly.
“While we will always sell trucks, we must develop business models and ensure that we can adjust our scale to meet new conditions. We must also continue delivering high-quality products that help our customers maintain profitability with their Volvo trucks.”
To ensure a seamless integration of Volvo’s electric trucks into DSV’s operations in Singapore, comprehensive support is provided through a 7-year Gold Service Agreement, covering all services and repairs. Additionally, UD Trucks Singapore delivered driver training prior to the handover, ensuring that DSV’s team is well-prepared to operate the vehicles efficiently.
Joseph Heng, General Manager of UD Trucks Singapore, said, “We are excited to be part of this green transition alongside DSV and Volvo Trucks. Providing comprehensive training and after-sales support to ensure these electric trucks deliver on their promise is central to our commitment to helping Singapore achieve its sustainability goals. With innovative technology and robust customer support, we are confident that DSV will see excellent operational performance and long-term value from these vehicles.”
DSV’s Alignment with Global and Local Sustainability Goals
DSV is dedicated to driving sustainable practices across its operations, with a global target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The adoption of the Volvo FL and FM Electric trucks in Singapore is part of a broader strategy to expand DSV’s electric vehicle fleet. DSV already operates electric vans and 10ft and 14ft e-trucks for some of their last-mile deliveries in Singapore. The introduction of these larger electric models signals DSV’s readiness to scale up as demand for sustainable logistics solutions increases.
In line with its bold vision to lead the global logistics industry, DSV recently signed a landmark agreement to acquire DB Schenker, marking one of the most strategic moves in its history. This acquisition not only enhances DSV’s logistics capabilities but also aligns with its mission to drive sustainable solutions worldwide. As the global focus on sustainability sharpens, DSV’s Singapore operation continues to push forward with innovative green initiatives, exemplified by its latest electric vehicle partnership with Volvo Trucks.
DSV has received positive feedback from clients interested in adopting electric vehicles for their operations. While enthusiasm is high, adoption will depend on specific operational requirements, and the company is actively working with potential customers to assess how electric trucks can enhance their supply chains.
