As the economic development and security needs of the Asia-Pacific region continue to grow, Airbus Helicopters is optimistic regarding its expansion within the region next year, driven by the rising demand in both civil and military sectors, especially for emergency medical services (EMS).
Its vice president and head of sales and marketing for Asia-Pacific, Thomas Zeman noted that Malaysia is currently experiencing growth across multiple sectors with significant investments focused on modernising the country’s armed forces, security agencies and emergency response capabilities.
“This is a trend we in Malaysia and other countries in the region as well,” he said during an exclusive demonstration of the Airbus H160 helicopter.
Zeman also highlighted that EMS is becoming a key factor in the region’s economic development, especially in countries with growing tourism industries, where there is an increasing need for reliable services to provide healthcare standards comparable to those of residents and visitors.
Globally, Zeman observed a notable shift towards reinforcing defense and security, making the integration of advanced technology essential in strategic frameworks.
“The company also projects a steady compound annual growth rate of nearly 3% in the helicopter business across the region, with varying growth drivers from one country to another.
“In Malaysia, for instance, public investment to modernise military and government fleets is expected to drive demand,” he noted.
Looking ahead, he shared that Airbus Helicopters is confident in achieving its global objectives for 2024 and beyond, amid challenges.
Zeman also announced significant investments in Malaysia, including a full-flight simulator set for deployment in 2026 to strengthen the company’s regional capabilities and better serve Southeast Asian customers.
Regarding the H160 helicopter, Zeman said the twin-engine model is designed to meet the growing needs of Malaysia’s commercial and private sectors, reflecting Airbus Helicopter’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia.
“The H160, known for its advanced features and versatility, is poised to capture significant market potential in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, where demand for private and business aviation is rebounding strongly,” he said.
He also highlighted that the H160’s has lower fuel consumption, capable of using up to 50% blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel, comfortable cabin and excellent cockpit visibility as features that make it suitable for various missions.
“With an 18% reduction in fuel consumption and a 50% reduction in perceived sound, the H160 allows customers to take a step forward reducing their carbon footprint,” Zeman added.
On 11 December 2023, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia granted type certification to Airbus’ next-generation twin0engine H160 helicopter, paving the way for its entry into the Malaysian market.
Currently, one H160 is in service in Malaysia with a second expected to join by next year. Globally, over 30 H160 helicopters are operational across 13 countries for various missions.
